Transgender solon to join AFP reserve corps

In solidarity with the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans (LGBT) community, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) is now allowing members of the LGBT sector to join the military.

In line with this, the Philippine’s first transgender congresswoman, Bataan Representative Geraldine Roman expressed her delight over the “positive and historic development” in the AFP.

With her historical win, the political neophyte also announced that she will be applying for the AFP reserve corps. Roman extolled the AFP on Wednesday, February 15, saying…

“This will complement their (AFP) appreciation for the LGBT community for they will see that we can exemplify the same sense of discipline, the same military professionalism, and the same love of country that the current men and women in uniform embody,” Roman said.

The LGBT champion also supported the revival and amelioration of Reserved Officers Training Course (ROTC) to be included in the K-12 curriculum, particularly for Grades 11 and 12.

The transgender solon was recently listed in Time Magazine as one of the Most Powerful Women of 2016 alongside Former US state secretary Hillary Clinton and artist Beyonce Knowles. Roman has also been cited in the list of 100 Global Thinkers for 2016 of the US-based Foreign Policy Magazine.
