Extensive torrential rain caused major flooding in Qatar

Extensive torrential downpour unleashed severe flash flood that pummeled parts of Qatar causing major inconvenience to many residences.

Abu Hamour suburb received nearly a year’s downpour reaching up to 61mm by early evening of Saturday (October 20).

According to Civil Aviation Authority, the said area in the capital Doha recorded a maximum of 84mm rainshower in just one day, which is considered to be nation’s highest amount ever recorded in the month of October.

Due to the bad weather conditions, air traffic was affected forcing Qatar Airways to divert bound flights to Kuwait and Iran.

The country’s public works authority advised drivers to avoid tunnels until cleared and open for traffic.

Roads and some establishments including Qatar’s National Library and the US embassy were also closed due to major floodings.

The Qatar Meteorology Department urges all the citizens to be cautious as thunderstorms and rain showers will still continue on Monday due to unstable weather conditions.
